I have read and heard that Sri Lanka is very strict on its rules when it comes to full moon days. I am not sure if this means days there are full moons or specific dates in general. I don't know what the rules are or if they apply to just locals or tourists as well. Can someone explain what the rules are and when they take place?
Every full moon is considered a national holiday. Usually, this is once a month but sometimes there can be two. These are called "Poya days".
The locals will celebrate and honor this event by offering flowers in Anuradhapura and also reflecting on the teachings of Buddha. The rules are fairly simple. Businesses are mostly closed these days and there is no sale of alcohol. Meat is also forbidden so you will be unlikely to find restaurants serving meat on these days.

It must be fairly rare to have more than two full moons in a month I would imagine, right? I wonder if those days are extra special..

You know, I have learned more from this short simple post than I had from trying to watch videos. Thank you! I didn't know that meat was not allowed as well. I figured alcohol was part of this.
